How to Negotiate A Great Deal on A Used Car from a Private Seller
When you're in the market for a used car, you can find a lot of great deals and some that are not so hot. Sometimes, you may be looking at one that may at first appear to be the later, but you may be able to turn it around if you know how to go about negotiating with the seller. The art of the deal, Haggling, negotiating, it all means the same thing, you know that the car is not worth the total price that the seller is asking, and you want to convince them to lower their asking to a level that you like. You may of course think that in this case the seller has all the power, due to the fact that all they have to do is say NO. In fact, the opposite is true, you have the power because with used cars, just as with anything else its buyers' market.
One thing that you need to do, is be prepared for the encounter. Have a couple of other cars in mind "even if they are just in your own imagination". This will allow you to talk about the other cars that you are considering, that are a little cheaper than this one. Odds are that the seller will match the price of the "other" cars that you are looking at and you just got your first price concession.
Secondly, take a friend along with you that knows about cars and the mechanics of them, if you have another friend that is familiar with the history of a brand or style of car and knows a lot about the real value of a car, they are a great asset to bring along as well. Make sure that these friends do a lot of talking to each other and to you. They should never talk to the seller directly if it can be avoided, and if they do have to, it should only be to ask a question, never to respond to one or to make a statement. They only speak to you about the condition of the car. This all puts the seller on notice that you are prepared with the best knowledge and that any issues that exist will be found. Just the mere fact that this is going on will most times trigger a seller to be more open to price talking.
Make sure that you are fully informed about the car, or at least appear to be, and get the seller to talk about the car. A lot of times if you can get them to talking they may slip up and let a secret about the car out. If you are quick you may be able to capitalize on that slip up and use it to talk them to a lower price. If you act like you are disturbed by the thing that they said they may be willing to give you a concession in the form of a more attractive asking price. Just try to not overdue it when you are playing up your concern or you may give yourself away.
Lastly make sure that you are realistic when you are starting a price negotiation. You are never going to get a seller to cut a price in half, and if you are looking at a decent car that only is guilty of having a few years on it, don't expect more than a 15-20% reduction from the asking price. You can get a great deal on a used car by negotiating with a private seller, but you must be reasonable about your expectations from the process.
